Barbara Folb knew the horn was the instrument for her after hearing a
recording of the Mozart Horn Concertos performed by Dennis Brain. At the
time she was not sure how you made a sound on it, or what it really was
like to lug around, but except for the occasional transportation
inconvenience has never regreted taking it up. She received her BFA in
horn from Carnegie Mellon University and her MM from Youngstown State
University. She has
studied with William Slocum, Forrest Standley, Dale Clevenger, and Douglas
Hill. After teaching and playing for several years with orchestras such
as the Civic Orchestra in Chicago, and chamber groups in Chicago and
Wisconsin. she made a career change to library science, and currently is
Public Health Librarian at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences
Library System. She enjoys the unparalled opportunity for intense musical
interaction and group decision making that chamber music provides. In
addition to playing
with the Aeolian Winds, she is Principal Horn of the Edgewood Symphony.
She considers herself a lifelong student of music. Each summer she attends
the The Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East,
enjoying the opportunity for playing with devoted amateurs and the
excellent coaching.
