Alex Jones has a B.A. in clarinet performance from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is currently the Principal clarinetist of North Pittsburgh Philharmonic. He was formerly a member of the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he has been rotating Principal clarinetist, the Principal Eb clarinetist, and Principal saxophonist from 2003-2004. He has also performed with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra.

Prior to his time in Pittsburgh, he was a member of the Northwestern University Summer Orchestra in Evanston, Illinois, from 2001-2002 and was the Principal clarinetist from 2002-2004. He was the Principal clarinetist of the Northwestern University Philharmonia Orchestra from 1998-2003, the Principal clarinetist for the Sinfonicron Light Opera Orchestra in Williamsburg, Virginia from 1996-1998, and a member of the William and Mary Symphony Orchestra in Williamsburg, Virginia from 1995-1998, Principal from 1997-1998. He was the Principal clarinetist in the All Virginia Honors Orchestra in 1994, and a member of the Virginia All District XII honors bands from 1991-1993, and the Principal player in 1993.

He has been an invited featured soloist for the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic, Northwestern Philharmonia Orchestra, University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the William and Mary Symphony Orchestra. He was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award.

As a chamber musician, he is currently the clarinetist for the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh Wind Quintet. He has performed locally with the University of Pittsburgh Chamber Octet and Clarinet Trio. He has been involved in a variety of ensembles including a school of music clarinet quintet (clarinet and string quartet) at Northwestern University, the Sinfonian Saxophone Quartet (soprano and alto saxophones) in Evanston, Illinois, the William and Mary Woodwind Quintet and Clarinet Quintets (clarinet and string quartet) in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Northern Virginia Wind Quintet in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Virginia Governors School Wind Quintet in Richmond, Virginia.

Alex Jones has a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Northwestern University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh.
